If the fourth deadly sin is anger, then whoever bashed in the head of eminent New York psychiatrist Simon Ellerbee had transgressed with a vengeance. Considered a saint by patients and fellow analysts alike, Dr. Ellerbee hardly seemed the type to meet so violent an end. But there it was, a strange and twisted crime in which every possible suspect had an ironclad alibi, and the killer's motive was unfathomable. With the murder making headlines, and not even a hint of a lead, the NYPD was under pressure to close the file on Ellerbee fast. So they did what they had to do: They called in Edward X. The Ellerbee killing was, as Delaney saw at once, an odd kind of crime — refined and discreet, yet hideous. Dr. Ellerbee's gorgeous psychologist wife demanded to see some police progress but could contribute nothing to the investigation — until, at Delaney's urging, she agreed to break her professional silence and provide him with a list of the late doctor's six most potentially violent patients.
The hunt was on — a hunt that would take Delaney down the back alleys of

anguish, into regions of the heart he wished he'd never glimpsed, and eye to eye with aberrations that would make him question his own sanity. Six suffering souls: a chronic wife-beater with the biggest chip in New York on his ex-boxer's shoulder; a fantasy-obsessed woman with an interest in the occult and a consuming dread of leaving her bizarre apartment; a beautiful boy with a subnormal IQ and the artistic talent of a genius; a Viet Nam vet with a hero's past and a derelict's future; a meek young woman with a monstrously overbearing mother and a history of suicide attempts; an effete gentleman with exquisite taste in dining and decor and a sexual guilt so intense it could turn at any time to out-and-out brutality.
Which of these six had struck out at their only source of salvation? Which one knew too much about the man behind the couch? And which had turned searing private pain to rage in a brilliantly plotted act of horror to challenge the matchless skills of Edward X. Delaney?
Even more instantly compelling, more intricately suspenseful than the bestselling Sins that preceded it, The Fourth Deadly Sin will prove to have been well worth the wait.
