This is a practical guide to meditation, a short, realistic primer for the business executive, housewife — and the student of mysticism. Lawrence LeShan, author of THE MEDIUM, THE MYSTIC AND THE PHYSICIST, explains simply and clearly why we meditate, how to meditate — there are many different ways — and what meditation does psychologically and physiologically.
Drawing upon the meditational practices of such disciplines as Zen, Sufi, Yoga, and Christian and Jewish mysticism, LeShan describes specific exercises and programs, both structured and unstructured, ranging from breath-counting and simple mantras to group movement and sensory awareness. He warns about alluring traps a meditant can fall into — the search for "instant enlightment" and "perfect masters," the confusion of metaphor and science, the desire to experience sensations ("lights," "visions") for their own sake — and advises on how to choose a teacher if you want one. This is a practical guide to meditation, a short, realistic primer for the business executive, housewife — and the student of mysticism. A practicing psychotherapist, LeShan also explores such intriguing fields as the role of meditation in psychotherapy and the relation of meditation to the paranormal.
Through the use of meditation, LeShan shows, it is possible to achieve a focusing of energies, an increased concentration and confidence that
lead to a greater efficiency in everyday life and eventually to a higher, inner peace. Anyone — including the busy person — can achieve that peace, but there is no one "best" way for all; there is simply a best way for each individual. HOW TO MEDITATE can help you find your own best way.
Lawrence LeShan holds degrees from the College of William and Mary, the University of Nebraska, and the University of Chicago. A practicing psychotherapist, he has served at Trafalgar Hospital, as the chief of the Department of Psychology at the Institute of Applied Biology, and as a lecturer and research psychologist at the Union Theological Seminary. He is presently engaged in a long-term study of parapsychology. The author of dozens of articles in psychological and psychiatric journals and of THE MEDIUM, THE MYSTIC AND THE PHYSICIST: TOWARD A GENERAL THEORY OF THE PARANORMAL, he is also the co-author of COUNSELING THE DYING. He lives in New York City.
Edgar N. Jackson is the author of UNDERSTANDING PRAYER, among other books. Vissza
