Probably no other living jurist has exerted the manifold and profound influences that may be attributed to the great and beloved Professor, Hans Kelsen, to whom these essays are dedicated. A scholar, teacher, and exceptionally productive author, Kelsen has made far-reaching contributions in such fields as legal and political philosophy, sociology, constitutional, administrative, and international law, and international organization. The publication of this volume marks the thirtieth anniversary of the first edition of Kelsen's Reine Rechtslehre, which appeared in 1934. His famous "Pure Theory of Law," however, originated more than fifty years ago. Hans Kelsen is now a United States citizen residing in Berkeley, California. The 28 essayists who have contributed to this Festschrift include former students of Kelsen, outstanding legal scholars, and practicing lawyers of international repute. Dr. Métall is Chief of Division of the International Labour Office, Geneva. He was an assistant to Professor Kelsen and the editor of the Revue internationale de la théorie du droit.
