This is the first history óf Hungarian music to appear in English since Bence Szabolcsi's Concise History of Hungarian Music was first published in 1931/1955. A lot has happened in Hungarian musicology since then; new areas of research have been opened up, including the medieval period and the eighteenth century. How many musicians who know Liszt, Bartók and Kodály realize there exists a corpus of Hungarian plainsong? Professor Dobszay teaches the history of Hungarian music at the Liszt Academy, and is Hungary's leading scholar of medieval plainsong, his work in this field having led to six recordings of Magyar Gregorianum under his own choral direction. He presents the various stages of Hungary's musical history clearly, logically, and with a mine of facts, figures and examples. Each chapter opens with a summary of the general historical situation in Hungary at the time, before proceeding to the music, dealing with the sources, the composers, the works, the styles, the influences and the social background.
