First a short survey is given pf the history of linguistic science with character sketches of the most eminent scholars to whom the development of modern comparative philology is chiefly due. Next the way is considered in which children learn their native language and influence the development of language in generál. The influence of foreigners and the existence of mixed languages are discussed at length, with a chapter on Pidgin English. One chapter is devoted to women's dialects, In the second part, chapters on the causes of phonetic and semantic changes, on the generál direction of linguistic changes towards simplification and perspicuity, on the origin pf grammatical endings, etc., on etymology and sound symbolism, lead up naturally to a discussion of the ultimate origin of humán language.
