Twenty-four magnificent full-colour plates showing some of the loveliest and most characteristic views of Lancashire and the Lake District form the basis of this book. Although geologically the Lake District is more or less a self-contained area, the county boundary of Lancashire, surprisingly to many people, includes a large and beautiful area of it, comprising one shore of Windermere and all Coniston, and running into the upper reaches of the Duddon Valley where the counties of Lancashire, Westmorland and Cumberland meet on the summits of the fells. The north-west is an area of contrast and variation. Twenty-four magnificent full-colour plates showing some of the loveliest and most characteristic views of Lancashire and the Lake District form the basis of this book. Here we have Blackpool, "a study in concrete and vitality", whose fine sea coast and illuminations attract many thousands of visitors each year; the industrial towns of Preston, Blackburn, Bolton and Oldham; the great sweep of Morecambe Bay; the long, jagged backbone of the Pennines; and the romantic mountains and tarns of the Lake District which have inspired many famous writers and poets—^Wordsworth, Gray, Scott and Ruskin, to name but a few.
The excellent introduction to the book is by Frank Singleton, who also provides a page of informative text about each plate. Mr Singleton has worked on the staff of The Spectator and also of the BBC Overseas News Services. Since 1945 he has been Editor-in-chief of Tillotsons Newspapers.
The jacket photograph is of Loughrigg Tarn with Langdale Pikes in the background, and is reproduced by kind permission of the British Travel and Holidays Association. Vissza
