And so for ovér thirty years they hounded Lawrence himself. Lady Chatterley's Lover was first published in 1928 but it was not until 1960 that people could at last read and judge the full text of this famous work for themselves.
The story moves on two levels. Against Sir Clifford's sterile self-regard is set the growth of love between Connie and Mel-lors. As they make love, Connie slowly finds and becomes herself, while from the first, Mellors' social apartness and priváté tenderness mark him out as the Lawrence hero. The növel alsó portrays the barren industrialism of England between the wars. Lawrence saw dearly and hated, as only he could hate, the alienation inherent in the machine age.
