David Herbert Lawrence was born at Eastwood, Notts, in 1885, the fourth child of a miner. At 13 he won a scholarship to Nottingham High School, which he left for a job with a firm of surgical goods manufacturers at a wage of thirteen shillings a week. He soon abandoned this to become a pupil-teacher at Eastwood.
While attending Nottingham University for his teacher's certificate,_ he began his first novel. The White Peacock, which was published by Heinemann in 1911. From that time onwards, with the exception of a short period as a schoolmaster in Croydon, he lived entirely by his writing. For two years he travelled in Germany and Italy, and, returning to England, was married in July 1^14 to Frieda von Richthofen. In 1919, the Lawrences left England and travelled, first in Europe and then in Australia and America.
They settled for a while in New Mexico, but came back finally to Europe in 1929. In that year Lawrence became seriously ill and he died of... Tovább
