BUILD YOUR OWN
LOW-COST HOME
If you are looking for compléte construction plans for an inexpensive primary house for all-year living, a low-priced summer home, a beach house or vacation house, this book can provide you with eleven full house plans suitable for any section of the country. Developed for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, under whose auspices they were originally published, these plans give you cora-plete information for building a sturdy, modern, permanent house that will meet building codes. Unexpected economy is managed by careful plan-ning, use of precise materials, and modern construction techniques. On the average the houses offered in this series cost roughly one half as much to build as comparable houses on the commercial markét, yet they are often more satisfactory.
The architects have devised a series of plans to meet a very wide rangé of needs. There is a house for two persons, and a house for a family of twelve, with other houses in between. There are conven-tional houses and there is alsó a round house, a tubular house and a duplex. Ali, however, have been designed to meet the twin needs of living convenience and minimum cost.
For each home are working drawings that cover: foundations (in most cases wood pile although alternate plans show how to provide concrete footings); floor construction; wall construction (in somé cases all interior walls are non-load-bearing and can be arranged to fit the individual builder's needs); roof construction; shelf and cabinet construction; all the elevations, front, back, left, right; and, construction details showing the rela-tionship of the various parts.
Together with the plans for the eleven houses is the construction manual which L. O. Anderson has prepared to accompany the plans. In it are more detailed descriptions of construction techniques, woods, alternate methods of siding, roof-ing, flooring, and foundations, and alsó details on additional methods which the home builder might need: concrete piling or foundation, porches, methods of nailing, types of nails for different purposes, and much more. Finishing techniques cover how to lay tile, how to frame windows and doors, millwork, steps and stairs, painting and finishing. A glossary of housing terms defines each word which might be unfamiliar to the reader.
As a self-contained unit, Build Your Own Low-Cost Home will be useful to anyone planning on doing major building. The designs cover many types of homes either to select from or to altér to more personal needs. The bili of materials and the spéci fications will provide a more realistic picture of what your home will cost (it might be much less than you think). The construction manual will provide, from before you begin to plan, through the actual construction, the clear directions that will make your home not only low cost, but alsó safe, warm, personal, beautiful, and everything else a home should be.
1972 publication. Includes 9 plans and construction manual originally published in 1969, and 2 plans as revise * n 1971. vii + 204pp. 11 x 16.
