When Kylie released her first record, the original 1987 version of'Locomotion' in Australia, it was regarded as just a spin-off to take advantage of her popularity as Charlene in the Aussie television series Neighbours. Even when her follow up record, 'I Should Be So Lucky' was released to a much wider audience and was another massive hit, many people confidently expected that Kylie the singer would eventually sink without trace as have so many other promising young chart toppers. Instead her singing career continued to blossom and grow, with hit after hit, and more than twenty years after that first single she is still an international A-list star, with a devoted following of fans in most countries around the world.

What the doubters had failed to take into account was that Kylie not only had the drive and passion to succeed, but also a genuinely good singing voice and considerable stage presence - despite her tiny stature. And however grateful she was to Neighbours for giving her a start, she knew she had more to offer than Charlene, which was one reason why she moved on so swiftly from any attempt at typecasting. Even before her well-publicised romance with bad boy rock star Michael Hutchence she was distancing herself from her initial girl-next-door image, and although at first it wasn't cool to like Kylie soon many major players in the music industry were falling over themselves to work with her. Many of her records were also taken up by the gay club scene, and it wasn't long before she was regarded as an undisputed gay icon.
Unfortunately Kylie's public success wasn't matched in her private life; she went through a series of failed relationships and in 2005 was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. She dropped out of public life for nearly a year during treatment, but when she returned in 2006 with her Showgirl: The Homecoming Tour it was a complete triumph. Since then she has gone from strength to strength and has even found success in America, which previously had been one area of the world where Kylie-fever had never really taken hold. Throughout her career, Kylie has handled both criticism and misfortune with dignity and charm and now pretty much everyone would wish her the ongoing success she deserves. She has certainly achieved credibility as a musician and also something else that might have seemed unlikely at the start of her career: now it's cool to be a Kylie fan. Vissza
