"The complex of problems which this book analyzes is still a 'hot potato': it has been generally approached with far more emotion than is good for any serious attempt to understand. The work of the terribles simplificateurs on both sides has been made unnecessarily easy by the thick fog of misunderstanding that shrouds the question of the nature and types of antiliberal nationalism. We shall demonstrate that there are many forms of antidemocratic and antiparliamentary nationalism which are not identical with Nazism, and we shall try to reveal the complexity of the various interweaving, yet distinct, strands of the Conservative Revolution which continues to hold the imagination of an appreciable number of Germans. One of our central purposes is to show how misleading are most current generalizations about 'neo-Nazism'. If it succeeds in demonstrating how irrelevant that label is to much contemporary German Rightist thought, this book will have partly justified its existence."... Tovább

If it succeeds in demonstrating how irrelevant that label is to much contemporary German Rightist thought, this book will have partly justified its existence."
—from the author's preface.

This monumental study, the fruit of ten years' work, seeks the answer to a question that in the light of recent history has grave implications for the world today: How dead is antidemocratic nationalism in Germany!
Mr. Tauber fully discusses the so-called neo-Nazism of postwar Germany, but he demonstrates with convincing documentation from a vast range of books, newspapers, and documents both public and private, in several languages, that the problem is far broader and far deeper than this sinister resurgence. He presents the many forms of antiparliamentary nationalism that are not related to neo-Nazism and makes clear that a basic sociopolitical conservatism continues to hold the imagination of an appreciable number of Germans.
To define the historical source of this conservatism is one of Mr. Tauber's major purposes. A second purpose is to analyze those factors that permit its survival and those that have prevented its decisive return to power. Mr. Tauber's third purpose is to describe in detail the rise of Germany's postwar nationalist leaders, their political parties, and their influence on the ideology, culture, and institutions of a nation recovering from the disaster of defeat.
In this enormously detailed analysis, as definitive as now possible, Mr. Tauber has made a distinguished contribution to the study of modern European history. No work of comparable depth, detail, and objectivity has ever been attempted on his subject. It is impossible to understand fully the highly complex political phenomena of postwar Germany without the testimony of this book. Vissza
