AMERICAN INDIAN CULTURAL HEROES AND TEACHING TALES
Several years ago in his book American Indian Prophecies, Kurt Kaltreider related discussions between John, a young white college student, and Chasing Deer, a Cheyenne/Lakota elder, in which the old man spoke of the vast differences between Euro-American and Indian culture. In this work, Kaltreider brings you the entertaining stories that Chasing Deer told John around the campfire at night.
The first section of this book tells the tales of three great figures in American Indran culture: two heroes of flesh and bone and one heroine of spiritual origin. These stories give us hope that in times of disarray and despair, a culture can be turned around to walk a more wholesome path.
The second section offers yarns from the Lakota that relate the dire consequences in store for those who choose to live a life of self-centered pursuit. In all of them, we're reminded that only a life lived in integrity and service is a life worth living.
In these times of social and spiritual decline, perhaps the stories contained within this book can help all of us find our way back to a life of spirit and right relationship.
Kurt Kaltreider, Ph.D., is of Nanticoke, German, and English descent. He graduated from Gettysburg College and holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in philosophy and clinical psychology from the University of Tennessee. Due to the erosion of traditional Indian cultures, Kurt devotes himself full time to the protection and support of the ways of his ancestors.
