It is difficult to compare the histo-
rical status of Thaddeus Kosciu-
szko and Casimir Pulaski.
To his countrymen Kosciuszko will
always remain a standard-bearer, a
national leader and ideologist while
Pulaski is regarded as the embodi-
ment of soldierly virtues. It was
their common involvement in the
American War of Independence that
elevated them to a similar rank.
Both of them were forerunners of
the Polish tradition of struggle "for
your freedom and ours" which arose
half a century later during the No-

As a result, both the heroes of this

Scanning the panorama of illustra-

only seek factual knowledge, but
also manifestations of tradition and
legend which have their place in
history too. Indeed they have often
served as an attractive starting point
for those who take pleasure in ex-
ploring the past. I hope this book
will be a starting point for those
who wish to find out about Thad-
deus Kosciuszko and Casimir Pu-
laski.
