First published 1890, Knut Hamsun's Hunger has come to be regarded ,9S one of the major modernist novels, anticipating and influenci ng much fiction that was to follow. As with- jj^ytfe's Ufysses, the story itself is simpte but the writing JA multi-layered, challenging and linguistically stunnkjR.

Sverre Lyngstad's new translation offers a significantly different rendering of Hamsun^masterpiece from the two previous English language versions, both of which^vére seriously flawed. At last, non-Norwegian speakers have the opptytunity to read a translation that does justice to the original.
