A refugee from the Nazis, Henry
Kissinger was one of the most unlikely celebrities ever to capture the world's imagination. But his prodigious intelligence, his energy and eccentric charm led to his 1973 appointment as US Secretary of State. He had many admirers, but has been criticized by both liberal
intellectuals and conservative activists who considered him a Dr Strangelove-figure, a manipulator who seemed dangerously devoid of moral principles.
Kissinger explores how Kissinger's character - brilliant, conspiratorial, furtive, prone to rivalry - related to the realpolitik of the times. It shows that while Kissinger's instinct for power was crucial in creating a new global balance that
helped America cope with the aftermath of Vietnam, this was not matched by a sense of the strength of America's democratic tradition.
Kissinger draws upon a wide range of sources, both critical
and favourable, including Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, H. R. Haldeman, John Erlichman, Russian diplomats, cabinet colleagues, disillusioned aides, political adversaries, childhood friends and business clients. Walter Isaacson, Assistant Managing Editor of Time magazine, has gained access to many of Kissinger's private papers, personal letters and secretly recorded telephone conversations; he has also examined Kissinger's desk diaries and those of various
officials, as well as memos of classified meetings and transcripts of FBI wiretaps. The result is a rich saga, filled with lively anecdotes and compelling revelations, which provides a critical yet fair assessment of the impact of Kissinger and his personality on US policy.
Walter Isaacson, Assistant Managing Editor of Time magazine, is co-author of The Wise Men: Six Friends and the World They Made.
He has worked for the Sunday Times and the New Orleans' States-Item . A graduate of Harvard and Pembroke College, Oxford, he lives in Bronxville, New York, with his wife and daughter.
