'Whenever one speaks about the importance of the Univer-sity Press' Péter Király writes 'it has to be made clear that the activity of the press reflects the political, social and cultural views of the government. In other words: in principles, and sometimes in practical problems of culture and book pub-lishing, the government, censorial authorities and the uni-versity had the decisive say. Nevertheless, this does not diminish the importance of the University Press.
The University Press, in the spirit of Ratio Educationis, with the support of higher authorities and institutions and with the cooperation of the peoples of the country, carried out book publising in national languages, thus providing peoples, ethnic groups of Hungary and neighbouring peoples with textbooks, linguistic, literary, historical, public educational and other works. In this respect the University Press did pioneer work as it was the first in Europe to accomplish the above goals.

I have been researching the subject of this book for twenty years. This work is only a summary of the findings of my archival and library research, contained in a longer manuscript. There is a hope that this complete version will be published in Germán with the support of the Hungárián Ministry of Culture and Education.
Although this work covers the period of 1777-1848, the ambitions, efforts and results of this era bear a message for our age, therefore they deserve attention and analysis.' Vissza
