John Blofeld's short book on King
Mongkut was first published in Singapore
in 1972 and was an act of homage to
an indisputably original and extra-
ordinary monarch who set his country
on a modernizing path and saved it
from colonization. In memory of the
author, who died in June 1987 and had
been a long-time supporter of the
Society, the Siam Society is reprinting
his text.
This edition of King Maha Mongkut
of Siam contains two sets of illustrations
which have not been generally available
before, and both were made in King
Mongkut's reign. One is a collection
of nine early photographs of Bangkok's
temples, taken by the Dutchman van
Kinsbergen in 1862. The other comprises
twelve black and white drawings made
by the Prussian Expedition to East Asia,
which was in Siam from 1861 - 62; these
were first published in Berlin in 1873.
The inclusion of these illustrations has
been made possible by a generous grant
from the Pimsai Foundation.
