The different diseases of the digestive tract have relatively recently become significant areas of specialization and gastroenterology is one of the most exciting and rapidly expanding of the medical disciplines.
Renowned for expertise in their distinct areas, contributors describe the most recent major advances which fall largely into three key topics: management of liver diseases, including chronic viral hepatitis, bleeding oesophageal varices, liver transplantation, and alcoholic liver disease; management of emergency conditions, focusing on acute pancreatitis, immunodeficiency virus infection, acute colitis, and imaging in obstructive jaundice; and finally, pharmaceutical considerations regarding peptic ulceration, namely, bicarbonate secretion, the significance of Campylobacter pylori, and nonsteroidal drug-induced damage.
