Magda Szabó in 1968 Magda Szabó was born in 1917 in Debrecen, Hungary, a Protestant city which was a great influence in her life, as were her parents, both of whom were talented writers. In addition to her baccalaureate and teacher's diploma she earned a doctorate in Latin and Hungárián. Already a published poet, Szabó became kown as a novelist with the publication of Fresco in 1958, her first, followed by The Deer in 1959. Numerous other novels followed, as well as more poetry, plays, travel diaries, essays, children's books, and two autobiographies. Her heroines are often intellectual women. She portrays the processes which play themselves out in the depth of the soul. behind which we can recognize the changes in Hungárián society with its hopes, its internál crises, tragedies, and rearrangements of personal relationships.
