Kanuni i Léke Dukagjinit The Code of Leké Dukagjini The laws and customs included in the Kanun-or Code-of Leké Dukagjini evolved over a period of many centuries, both before and after the lifetime of the historical personage to whom they are traditionally ascribed. Somé may ha ve actua Ily originated among the Illyrians, the ancestors of the Albanians, while it is possible that others date back to remote antiquity-to a period before the vast migrations of the Indo-Europeans. Transmitted orally for generations, the laws of the Kanun served for more than five centuries as the foundation of social behavior and self-government for the clans of Northern Albania, e ven while the region was nominally under Turkish rule. The importance of the Kanun in the history of the Albánián people can scarcely be overestimated, and its precepts continue to exercise a very significant influence on Albanians living in Albania and Kosové, as well as in other countries to which Albanians have emigrated.... Collected and arranged by Father Shtjefén Gjegov during the first quarter of the twentieth century, this new edition of the Kanun presents the Albánián text along with a parallel translation by Leonard Fox, a scholar who has long been involved with the study of Albánián language and culture. Anton Logoreci, the noted authority on Albania and author of numerous works, including the book, The Albanians, has written about this translation of the Kanun: "VJhat else can I say except to express my astonished admiration for having coped so successfully with a task of such enormous complexities and difficulties." The Code of Leke Dukagjini will be of great interest to scholars and students in many disciplines, particularly comparative law, anthropology, and Balkan, Classical, and Near Eastern studies. In addition, English-speaking individuals of Albánián origin, for whom the archaic and terse language of the originál is not readily comprehensible, will at last have access to one of the great historical and living treasures of their culture.
