Kaj Thaning: N.F.S. GRUNDTVIG Kaj Thaning (born 1904) became a priest in the Danish National Church in 1932, prior to which he had been a teacher at the Grundtvig Folk High School just north of Copenhagen. His childhood home was much influenced by Grundtvig's ideas, which meant that he grew up with the problem presented by Grundtvigianism and subsequently decided to probe into it more deeply. After making a study of Grundtvig's unpublished papers he found that his own assessment of the real core of Grundtvig's achievement differed from the generally accepted view. He discovered that 1832 was the turningpoint in Grundtvig's life. In a doctoral thesis which he entitled First A Man . . . (published in Danish in 1963) he provided documentation in support of this. In a shorter book, For the Sake of Humán Life (1971) he has given a summary of Grundtvig's basic outlook. This has been accepted by the authors of such dissertations as have appeared since then. The two above-mentioned titles are Grundtvigian quotations and symbolize the main theme of his philosophy after 1832, namely that "Christianity exists for the sake of humán life" and that without acceptance of this fundamental truth every word on the subject of Christianity must sound hollow. Grundtvig's concept of the Folk High School is based on his belief that enlightenment of humán life and of the life of any people is of decisive importance in itself-quite apart from Christianity.
