This publication is devoted to unique architectural and historical eighteenth century monuments to be seen in Leningrad.
Peter the Greafs house was the first residential building erected in 1703 (between May 24 and 26). Now it is a museum housing objects from the eighteenth century, including Peter's personal belongings.
Constructed between 1710 and 1712, the Summer Palace is a fine example of the architecture of the Petrine epoch. Some of the rooms, with their tiled stoves, painted ceilings, and panelled walls, retain elements of the original decoration. They illustrate the general stj'le of a palace interior in Peter the Greafs time.
The Summer Gardens, Russia's first formal park, were laid out on the order of Peter the Great who personally took part in their planning. Their avenues are adorned with statues, the work of late seventeenth and early eighteenth century Italian sculptors,—Gropelli, Zorzoni, Bonazza and others. At a later period, when the Neva embankment was being built, a most exquisite wrought-iron grille was put up to separate the Summer Gardens from the embankment. This grille is world-famous for its artistic perfection.
