If any work may be called "definitive" it is the present volume; not only was the text written by one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century art, but it also includes a remarkable section of theoretical writings by Gris, which are an important testament of Cubist aesthetics.
Together with Picasso, Braque, and Léger, Gris was one of the great Cubist masters. Of the four he was the "classicist," and his art embodied an impeccable color sense of great subtlety, an instinctive mastery of line and composition, and an unerring technique in the handling of spatial relationships. Gris was perhaps the most austere and refined of all the Cubists, and his work may be regarded as the quintessence of the style. A rare combination of imagination and mathematical logic, his images are immediately communicated to the viewer.

The text was written by Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler at the time of his self-imposed exile in Switzerland during World Warll. When the book was first issued, in ii)46, it was hailed as one of the most invaluable documents of contemporary art. The relatively small printing was soon exhausted, and for over two decades the book was an avidly sought-after collector's item. Now republished in a more generous format, the contents have been expanded to include a large number of new illustrations, including many colorplates. In addition, a catalogue raisonné of the artist's graphic work has been included, which appears here for the first time.
The author was a close friend of Gris throughout his entire career, and as an art dealer he was one of the first champions of the Cubists. Not only did he advance their cause materially, but through his writings he became one of their most articulate defenders. Kahnweiler's taste and vision enabled him to become the foremost art dealer of our time. His association with Gris lends undisputed authority to his text, for, as Gertrude Stein once stated: "No one can say that Henry Kahnweiler can be left out of him [Gris]."
