Ancient and mysterious, for centuries the land which is now Pakistan has attracted scholars and mystics, adventurers and mercenaries. Up its craggy defiles have climbed such warriors as Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan, in search of plunder and glory. More peacefully, its cities of Harappa and Moenjodaro were at the heart of the great Indus Valley Civilization over 4,500 years ago.
Modem Pakistan, born in 1947 out of the ashes of Imperial India, has inherited the beauties of its ancient past. Physically a dramatic country, it boasts eight of the world's ten highest peaks,including the breath-taking K2. Here, in the permanent snow and frost of the far north, giant glaciers spill down the mountain slopes, melting at lower altitudes and filling the gorges below with raging torrents of white water.

The country's history and diversity is reflected in the faces and cultures of its eighty-four million people: the proud and warlike Pathans of the North-West Frontier, for so long the scourge of successive invaders; the gentle, retiring Baltis and Kohistanis of the north; the tough farmers of the central plains and the merchants and businessmen of the growing cities.

MOHAMED AMIN Africa's leading photographer has for twenty years portrayed the people, the wildlife and the dramatic events of the fast-changing continent. His photographs have appeared in books and magazines throughout the world. In 1969 he was named Cameraman of the Year in the British Television Awards and he has worked on several prize-winning documentaries for the British Broadcasting Corporation, Granada Television and others, and makes newsfilms under contract to Visnews, the world's biggest TV news agency.
Of more than twelve books which he has published, among the most recent are Pilgrimage to Mecca (1978), Mecca (1980), Cradle of Mankind (1981) and Journey through Kenya (1982).
Born in Nairobi, Kenya, he is the Chief Executive of Camerapix Publishers International. He is married with one son.
DUNCAN WILLETTS an outstanding creative photographer, has been working with Camerapix in Kenya for six years. Born in England, he worked for two years in Sudan before moving to Kenya where his work has earned him international recognition. His photographs have appeared in many international newspapers and magazines including Time and Newsweek. He is also co-author of Journey through Kenya (1982).
GRAHAM HANCOCK has had wide-ranging experience as a writer and editor. He was for three years Managing Editor of Middle East Annual Review and Co-Editor of New Internationalist Magazine, and subsequently Editor of The Traveller magazine. He contributes regular articles to the Guardian newspaper and to The Economist.
