ehind the walls of a Mex-
ican penitentiary lives a
mysterious prisoner. The
judges who, in 1943,
found him guilty of murder were con-
vinced that everything he said about
his identity was untrue. Newspapers
and magazines the world over carried
his picture and reports of his deed,
but not a single witness came forward
to testify to having known him. For
nine years he has hidden his identity
— and the instigators of his crime.
The unknown prisoner calls him-
self Jacques Mornard Vandendreschd,
and claims to be a Belgian born in
Persia in 1904. He is the/ murderer of
the man whom Joseph Stalin hated
most — Leon Trotsky.

Nothing is known of Vanden-
dreschd before 1938, when Sylvia
Ageloff, a 27-year-old clinical psy-
chologist employed by the New
York City Board of Education, left
her job and went to Paris. Shortly
after her arrival she met a hand-
some young man who called himself
Jacques Mornard and said he was
studying journalism at the Sorbonne.
He took her to museums and theaters,
restaurants and night clubs. He had
plenty of money, and told Sylvia
that he came of a distinguished Bel-
gian family.
A year before Mornard-Vanden-
dreschd and Sylvia met, one of her
sisters had gone to Mexico to be-
come a secretary to Leon Trotsky.
