be regarded as the standard reference work on its subject, I and Its author Jonathon Green has been hailed as the
authentic successor to the great slang lexicographer Eric Partridge.
In the intervening years Jonathon Green has continued to research the English slang vocabulary in ever-greater depth, hunting down and recording written instances of the use of as many slang words as possible from some five centuries of language use. This has entailed trawling through more than 3500 books - plus song lyrics, TV and movie scripts, and countless newspapers, magazines and websites - for relevant material. The fruits of this research are displayed for the first time in this second edition of Cassell's Dictionary of Slang (CDS2).
CDS2 represents a major advance on its predecessor, both in lexical quantity and in lexicographical quality. The author's research has not only uncovered many thousands of new slang words and expressions (CDS2 includes more than 12,000 entirely new entries, plus several thousand new definitions of existing headwords), but has also enabled him to make a myriad enhancements to the existing dictionary text. Thus, while the core of the entries has been kept in place, new research has ensured that many aspects, whether dating, definitions or etymologies, hove been notably improved. Dates of first use of numerous words and phrases have been found to be rather earlier than existing evidence has suggested, revealing much of the English slang lexicon to be far older than we have been hitherto aware.
In short, what CDS2 represents in many ways is a new book: more knowledgeable, more accurate, more encompassing of the slang lexicon and, as a result, more useful to the reader. Vissza
