On the morning of 7 July 2005, John Tulloch left a friend's fiat in central London and began his walkto the Tube. Running late, when he arrlved at the platform he chose the second carnage so that he could exit the Underground quickly at Paddington. He sat down near the end of one of the benches. Although he didn't know it at the time, he was just three feet away from suicide bomber Mohammad Sidique Khan.
One Day in July is the story of how John happened to be In the wrong place at the wrong time. One Day in July is the story of how John happened to be In the wrong place at the wrong time. It Is a moving narrative of his 7th of July: his recollections of what happened to hlm when the bomb exploded, his injuries, his récupération during the months that followed. But it is also much more than that. John Tulloch is a professor of media and sociology and an expert on risk who has spent his career analysing how the media respond to major events. He has written books and papers on risk and everyday life. On 8 July his bloodied image was used by the majority of British newspapers. Over the Coming days and weeks, time and again, he was interviewed and photographed and asked for comment. One paper used a 7 July plcture of him to further a campaign with which John vehemently disagreed.
In addition to his work on media and risk, John has worked in Kosovo ançixfcsessed the impact of recent wars there and in Iraq on Western society. One Day in July draws on this: and his other work and combines it with his own personal view of where we are today as a society at war, at home and abroad. By turns profoundly moving, impassioned and acutely sensitive to the nuances of modern politics and how they are played out via the media, this is a truly compelling and important book about one of the most horrifie landmarks of ourtimes.
