In More Words, the second collection of John Silverlight's Observer columns, the author continues his mission of seeking to inform and entertain by reporting-rather than pronouncing or commenting-on language usage as he observes it in the press and books and hears it on the radio and television and in conversation. But there is also a new element, or more precisely, a development of an element already present in the first collection, Words: the part played in the column by its readers. The inclusion of letters and replies to them alongside the reprinted pieces, wrote one reviewer, 'gives a much more coherent shape to the book-a dialogue rather than a monologue'. In effect, John Silverlight now has a small army of fellow word-watchers working with him. Thanks to the readeia, the column has developed into something of a forum, an informed, many-sided conversation on the use of English.
