Basic Listening is a collection of short, authentic recordings with graded tasks to develop listening micro-skills in elementary learners of English as a second or foreign language.
Basic Listening has three underlying principles:
• all learners of a foreign language are sooner or later faced with native speakers talking at ordinary speed; even elementary learners should and can be given the confidence to cope with this.

• listening is not one skill but a number of micro-skills - recognition, selection, short-term memory, inference. Basic Listening develops these micro-skills systematically.
• when we listen, we do so for a purpose and in a specific context. Basic Listening presents the learners with realistic tasks, and so focuses their attention on what is essential and encourages them to disregard what is not relevant to performing the task. The 15 units cover everyday situations where listening accurately is crucial/such as in using the telephone.

The Student's Book contains the tasks the learners have to perform.
The Teacher's Book contains detailed instructions to help the teacher before the listening, during the listening and with ideas for following up the listening. The student's pages are reproduced with answers, and there are transcripts of all the taped material.
The Cassette is 70 minutes long. There is a wide range of voices and mild accents.
Basic Listening has been written for elementary learners, but will provide much useful material for higher levels. It can be used in class or by a student working alone.
