Handmade in Italy is a celebration of the
designs, materials, and methods used by contempo-
rary Italian artisans, whether individually or within
small family businesses. Despite the ever-increasing
trend toward speed and mass production, these arti-
sans continue to make beautiful, original pieces.
This book is the product of a journey made by
John Ferro Sims, an Italian-speaking author and
photographer, who traveled the length and
breadth of Italy visiting a wide range of artisans in
their workshops. From legendary glassmakers on
Murano to Sicilian and Sardinian ceramicists and

with them about their personal and family
histories, their craftsmanship, and their passion
and dedication to their work.
This book is divided into chapters according to
the materials used: stone, ceramics, wood, metal,
textiles, and glass with a final chapter on applied
arts, covering subjects such as fresco and leather-
work. Sumptuous brocades and velvets, wooden
intarsia panels, finely sculpted stone, amazing pietra
dura designs, perfect copies of ancient ceramics,
elegant damask steel shepherds' blades and
incredibly ornate Venetian mirrors — these are all
captured in this portfolio of stunning images. Vissza
