It is thus global in scope and provides room for analysis of both energy supply and energy demand, and it goes beyond solely technical considerations by seeking to understand energy issues in light of the humán condition as a whole. Symposium I, which was held October 14-17, 1980, focused on defining the nature of the problem. The results of its presentations and discussions constitute the text of these Proceedings. Building on these results, Symposium II, to be held November 3-6, 1981, will serve as the analytical component of the Series from which generál proposals and specific recommendations will be carried forward. In turn, deliberations at Symposium III, scheduled for May 23-27, 1982, will develop resolutions to help rectify the world energy crisis. The international energy exposition hosting this fórum is the World's Fair to be held in Knoxville, Tennessee, from May 1 through October 31, 1982. The Fair is committed to improving international understanding of energy issues affecting the world and, as part of this mission, has taken the lead role in sponsoring the iess. Alsó instrumental to the Series' execution are the Energy Opportunities Consortium and the iess Program and Organizing Committees, which, assisted by the Fair staff, have planned the Series. Primary responsibility for the Series' program development and management and for its Proceedings has been assumed by the University of Tennessee's Energy, Environment, and Resources Center. Set within the context of the 1982 World's Fair-a symbol of worldwide cooperation and exchange-the iess is intended to help resolve world energy problems by bringing different perspectives together and coalescing them into a coordinated framework. Through the Series' Proceedings, these integrated perspectives can theninform the decisions of scientific personnel, government policymakers, and the lay public in their attempts to address energy problems.
These Proceedings were compiled and edited by members of The University of Tennessee's Energy, Environment, and Resources Center (eerc). At its inception in 1972, the Center was directed to perform research and public service in environmental studies. Concern for environmental quality has since led it to develop major programs addressing energy supply and demand factors, as these factors have a major impact on the United States today. In response to its initial mandate, eerc was organized flexibly, allowing it to form interdisciplinary groups of experts to meet the challenge of multifaceted environmental problems. As a result, the Center has emerged as The University's focal point for multidisciplinary programs dealing with energy and the environment. Róbert A. Bohm is Professor of Fináncé in The University of Tennessee's College of Business Administration and Associate Director of eerc. Healso serves as a consultant to research and government institutions. His numerous research projects and publications have been directed towards energy and environmental economics, and he is coauthor of the text and reference book Energy Management: Theory and Practice. Lillian A. Clinard is Assistant Director for Information and Education Programs at eerc. She has developed a number of publications, reports, and audio-visual programs on energy management strategies and resources, including the book Energy Conservation in the Home, and has consulted for seminars and short courses held throughout the United States. Mary R. English is a writer and editor in the field of energy and environmental concerns and currently is affiliated with eerc. She previously has worked in the area of environmental planning, centering on land regulation and management, and has contributed to publications in this area. Vissza
