"He has as many talents as a cat has lives", wrote Frank O'Connor of John Brophy's short stories, and an outline of Mr. Brophy's writing career substantiates the statement. He is known primarily as a novelist and four of his best sellers have been made into films, each retaining its own title: Waterfront with Richárd Burton, Immortal Sergeant with Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara, Turn the Key Softly with Joan Collins, and The Day They Robbed the Bank of England with Peter O'Toole. A boy soldier in World War I (he enlisted at the age of 14), John Brophy afterwards became an acknowledged authority on the slang and the satire and the songs of that period.
