JOHN AUDRIG Among the countries of South-east Asia, Siam (or Thailand, as it is now called) is the only one which has always been independent. This places it in a special position; it is able almost to select the kind of influence that other countries have upon it. It has selected American aid, and many Thais have benefited from a United States college education. John Audric served for some years as adviser to the Siamese government on secondary education. The author was thus able to see Siam both officially and unofficially, as a private resident and by gaining special access to schools, universities, monasteries, and civil courts. The insight into contemporary life that he gained in this way is also supported by knowledge of the country's history, from the days of feudal kings in their bejewelled capitals to the period of the Death Railway and the political intrigues behind the formation of the present Thai government. His experience has allowed him to treat, with authority and interest, such subjects as Siam's rice-based agriculture ; the festivals that fill the Thai year ; monks and monasteries; the country's judicial system ; education ; the Chinese in Siam, and the troubling unrest both in the north-eastern provinces and the southern Moslem-Malay area.
