ABOUT THE ARTIST
Pelagie Doane—A Noted Illustrator of Children's Books
Pelagie Doane, apart from being an author in her own right, is also a noted illustrator of children's books. Her illustrations for the Heidi books have won her universal acclaim; for the charnning style of child portrayal, which typifies all her work, Is particularly suited to the fresh simple beauty of these well-loved children's classics. She lives in the United States and originally trained as an interior decorator, only turning to illustration work later. One of the secrets of her success is in the view she holds— "Children are people—so I paint up to their level, not down." Pelagie Doane, apart from being an author in her own right, is also a noted illustrator of children's books. Her illustrations for the Heidi books have won her universal acclaim; for the charnning style of child portrayal, which typifies all her work, Is particularly suited to the fresh simple beauty of these well-loved children's classics. Her talent in the religious field is equally rennarkable, and children remember the Bible stories more vividly after seeing her illustrations and reading the reverent text which, in many cases, she has written herself.
She lives in the United States and originally trained as an interior decorator, only turning to illustration work later. One of the secrets of her success is in the view she holds— "Children are people—so I paint up to their level, not down." The small children of the district in which she lives are frequent visitors to her studio, and they unhesitatingly offer her their criticisms and suggestions. This intimacy with her readers is a great source of strength to her.
For many, many years now, children have read Heidi and have loved this simple, sweet story of a little girl who lived high up on the Swiss Alps.
She Is a lively, carefree little creature, and in her innocent approach to life's problems there is a child-lil<e wisdom which brings true happiness, not only to herself, but also to many unhappy grown-up people around her.
Children still enjoy reading about the Aim-Uncle, Peter the goat-herd, the old, blind grandmother, Clara and the people from Frankfurt, just as generations of children before them have done. It all seems so real and true! —because Johanna Spyri was writing about a life she knew and loved.
She was born at Hirzel, near Zurich, in a wonderfully beautiful district— Lake Zurich and dark fir forests on one side, on the other, the shimmering Bernese Oberland. Just as Heidi did, little Johanna loved the beautiful scenery amidst which she grew up, and she, too, would often stop to listen to the roaring of the wind in the fir trees.
She wrote Heidi in 1880, at a time when Switzerland, always the country of refuge, was succouring the wounded and homeless from the Franco-Prussian War. Money was needed urgently, so Johanna Spyri published Heidi. It was an immediate success, and is still one of the world's most popular children's stories. Vissza
