ERLANG is a functional programming language intended for designing large
industrial real-time systems. Dynamically typed, with a pattern matching
syntax, ERLANG provides explicit concurrency with asynchronous message
passing in a distributed environment.
Developed at the Ellemtel Telecommunications Systems Laboratories and
used extensively within Ericsson for product development and prototyping,
ERLANG addresses a number of problems in parallel programming which
are difficult to solve when using other languages. ' j

The authors are all employed at the Ericsson computer science laboratory.
Joe Armstrong has over twenty years' experience in industry, and has
designed and implemented several real-time systems.
Robert Virding has worked for many years as a computer scientist
specialising in compiler writing and real-time garbage collectors.
Claes Wikstrom is a mathematician with several years' experience of
computer science research. He is an expert in the design of distributed
systems and real-time databases. \
Mike Williams has worked in the telecommunications industry for twenty-
five years, building a large variety of real-time systems. He is an expert on
the software problems associated with large soft real-time systems.
