Joan Robinson's 'unique contribution to économies lies not only in her récognition of the full significance of the Keynesian Révolution, and its relationship to Marxist theory, but also in the manner in which, on these bases, she has forged new theoretical tools to tackle a remarkable variety of economie problems.' — Challenge
This sequel to Contributions to Modem Economies is devoted to 'pure theory' but the purpose is to mould theory into a form that will throw light on the world in which we live. This sequel to Contributions to Modem Economies is devoted to 'pure theory' but the purpose is to mould theory into a form that will throw light on the world in which we live. The effort to clear the way for a new synthesis necessarily entails a critique of un-satisfactory arguments that have become established in the field. Significantly, where the first volume of Contributions was dedicated to the author's students, this one is dedicated to her critics.
The focal point of the first section, Analysis, is the essay Time in Economie Theory' which illuminâtes all the rest. The second section, entitled 'Controversy', brings together invaluable surveys of trends in modem économies and highlights the issues of debate in which the author has been involved. It includes some hitherto unpublished correspondence; and the survey specially written for this volume, 'Retrospect: 1980', fînally clears up the debate on the 'reswitching' of techniques.
The last group of papers constitutes an appeal to contemporary Marxists to eschew dogmatism and join in the project of extricating economie theory from the desert of neoclassical equilibrium and using it to till more fruitful fields.
