For someone famous for his portrayals of the Wild West, Remington had a rather staid, middle-class childhood from which he rebelled. Having shunned a military career and the life of a bureaucrat, he traveled west and bought a sheep farm with his inheritance. Failing as both a rancher and as a saloon owner, Remington returned east empty-handed apart from his portfolio full of sketches. Magazines like Harper's Weekly and Scribner's^ pandering to the public's fascination with the West, eagerly published Remington's realistic renderings of bucking broncos, stampedes, shoot-outs, Indian raids, and military campaigns.
After securing his fame as an illustrator, Remington turned to the medium for which he is now best known - oil painting. Although he was always modest when describing his skill as a painter, Remington's canvases present a remarkable picture of the Old West. In the great fights for that territory, Remington sympathized with the soldiers whom he portrayed as heroic figures in paintings such as A Dash for the Timber (1889) and On the Southern Plains (1907). Remington's superb sense of movement allowed him to create star-tlingly reahstic paintings of anything from galloping horses to running men.
