The unity of Provence appears in certain features influenced by its climate, its vegetation and particularly by its language, or accent. This unity does, however, embrace an endless rangé of variations in terrain, and in the effect of the sea and the winds; it is moreover connected with an extremely rich folklore. First we must remember one highly important historical fact : the civilizations - Phenician, Greek, Román - which entered Gaul, and thereafter the Western world from the East, all passed through Provence. For six whole centuries, the history of Provence was not the history of Gaul, but that of Ronhe. In the words of Pliny, it was "more than a province - another Italy". Greek colonies were founded on a Celto-Ligurian substratum, and were followed by the Román legions. Provence, which was for a long time nourished by Romé, its culture and its laws, was alsó the threshold over which Christianity infiltrated the northern peoples which were then known as the barbarians.
