In the course of half a century Maurice de Vlaminck ranged from the brilliant pyrotechnics of Fauvism to unfettered lyricism, from a joyous, revolutionary concept of art to a romantic, almost traditional style of landscape painting. Born in Paris in 1876, he earned a living as a bicycle racer and a violinist. As a member or the Fauvist movement, v^^hich flourished from 1905 to 1908, he worked with Derain at Chatou. In spite of a strong personal hostility to contemporary experiments he paradoxically played a major role in the development of new artistic techniques. By analyzing an artistic output marked by complexity and apparent contradictions, Jean Selz provides a key to Vlaminck's character and enduring quality. The artist is depicted as a man so obsessed by a fierce need for independence that he became an exceptional artist, isolated in the solitude of a great master.
