INDIANA
Photography by Darryl Jones Text by Jared Carter
Indiana lies at the heart of the nation and the national experience. Americans fought for control of its land during the Revolutionary War; nearly two hundred years later, Hoosier astronauts manned some of the first missions into outer space.
This book gives a clear picture of the Hoosier State today—the people who live here, the farmsteads and courthouse squares, the landscape ranging from sand dunes along Lake Michigan to old steamboat towns bordering the Ohio River.
Statehood in 1816 and the beginnings of westward expansion made Indiana the crossroads of America. It retains that role today, balancing agriculture and industry, tradition and innovation. Its railroads and highways are central to the nation's transport system. A major producer of corn, soybeans, pork, and beef, it is also a leading manufacturer of steel, automotive parts, and electronic components.

From the era of Knute Rockne and the Four Horsemen of Notre Dame to Indiana University's NCAA basketball champs coached by Bobby Knight, the state's athletes have dominated collegiate sports. Race fans around the world know Indianapolis as the site of the annual 500-Mile Race. And now, with its Olympic-caliber natatorium and running track, its new domed stadium, its tennis courts and velodrome, Indianapolis bids fair to become the amateur sports capital of the nation.
Indiana's modern glamour and historic charm are reflected in this collection of full-color photographs taken by Darryl Jones, a native of the state. With his cameras he has traveled the back roads and stopped at the quiet places among the lakes and hills, walked the streets of the big cities, and studied the buildings and historical monuments.
With precision and skill, he shares his vision of Indiana in these pages—a series of images evoking everything from the excitement of the final game of the boys' high-school basketball tournament to the grace of a flight of sandhill cranes lifting away from one of the state's many nature preserves.
In the accompanying text, Jared Carter, also a native, describes the people and events which have given Indiana its distinctive character. He writes with a poet's understanding of the traditions and accomplishments of these Hoosiers, past and present, whose hearts will always be "back home again in Indiana."
Jacket photograph: Round barn at Pasture Brook Farm in northern Indiana, near Rochester, has an interior diameter of sixty-nine feet. Eleven such buildings dating from the early 1900s may be visited during the Fulton County Round Barn Festival each July.
