Collins COBUILD English Course represents a major advance in the teaching of English. It is based on the research findings of the COBUILD project at Birmingham University - the same research which produced the acclaimed Collins COBUILD English Language Dictionary. It focuses on the real English students will encounter and need to use in today's world.
There are three levels, taking students up to pre-First Certificate standard.
Book 2 is for early intermediate adult learners. Fifteen units will provide about 100 hours of class work.
¦ The syllabus extends knowledge of the 700 words from Level 1, and introduces a further 850 frequently used words.
¦ Basic grammatical areas are revised in early 'Grammar Words' sections. A functional approach to grammar in later units covers clause relations. Separate 'Phrase-building' sections focus on clause structure.

¦ A wide cross-section of real texts promotes reading for pleasure, as well as developing functional reading skills. Word study boxes alongside texts encourage students to be selective in their vocabulary building.
¦ Students listen to native speakers using the language in challenging situations.
¦ Oral and written tasks cover a range of topics. Activities focus in turn on accuracy and fluency.
¦ Training in reference skills is provided through a 'Lexicon' appendix, where selected words from the Level 2 syllabus are presented as short alphabetical entries.
A set of cassettes accompanies the Course, and the texts of the unscripted recordings are included in a special transcript booklet at the back of the Student's Book. The Practice Book provides further reading and writing exercises for use in or out of class. The Teacher's Book gives practical guidance and support on all aspects of the Course and its syllabus.
