JAN VERMEER'S PAINTINGS FASCINATE US NOT SO MUCH FOR their subjects, which are hinited, but for the poetic ways his images are portrayed. A woman pouring milk in a sunlit room, a girl adorning herself with pearls, a gentleman offering a lady a glass of wine: Vermeer fills such everyday scenes with shades of thought and meaning that are at once universal and mysterious.
This new volume in Abrams' Masters of Art series not only contains every one of Vermeer's authenticated works but also makes available the most recent scholarly discoveries concerning his life. The forty large, glowing colorplates, which reveal many significant stylistic details, are supplemented by fifty-seven engrossing black-and-white photographs, among them X-ray studies and works by Vermeer's contemporaries. The valuable text and meticulously reproduced illustrations combine to make Vermeer both a fine introduction and an outstanding tribute to a universally loved master.
Arthur K. Wheelock, Jr., is Curator of Northern Baroque Painting at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and also professor of art history at the University of Maryland. His first book dealt with perspective and optics in seventeenth-century Dutch art.
