The valuable text and meticulously reproduced illustrations combine to make Vermeer both a fine introduction and an outstanding tribute to a universally loved master.
Arthur K. Wheelock, Jr., is Curator of Northern Baroque Painting at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and also professor of art history at the University of Maryland. His first book dealt with perspective and optics in seventeenth-century Dutch art.
