The substance of James McAuley's high reputation as critic, intellectual
and poet is found here in Collected Poems. Over a distinguished and prolific career, his lyrical, narrative and satiric verse gained him a place as one of Australia's leading poets.

A first reading of his poetry is by no means exhaustive. Familiarity with his work breeds deeper understanding. His best poems—of which there are a great many—pass this crucial test. They continue to yield up new meanings, and to grow with one's own experience. He is certainly one of Australia's finest lyricists, and long after his detractors have been forgotten, the voice of his eloquent and searching wisdom will continue to be heard.
