Reprinted from a rare 19th-century edition, this beautiful book—featuring over 370 designs-depicts the development of English foliated ornament from the 12th to the 15th centuries. Its splendid examples of Norman, Gothic and other early architectural styles were taken from decorative stonework in English churches and cathedrals built during the medieval period. Most of the designs imaginatively combine floral and interlaced foliate elements, while others depict mythical beasts, saints and human figures.
The sources are stone capitals, doorways, spandrels, diaper work, brackets, bosses, finials, canopies, stall carvings, cusps, screen-work and other design elements that decorate small parish churches—from Herefordshire and Northampton to Oxfordshire and Kent—as well as such great English cathedrals as Canterbury, Winchester, Salisbury and Westminster Abbey.
