This is the story of the life and work of the great peacemaker and humanitarian, Albert Schweitzer. He was a famous musician, author and religious thinker when, at the age of 30, he suddenly announced that he was going to go to Africa to help the sick and the dying. He already had two doctorates, but proceeded to retrain as a doctor of medicine and then left his brilliant career behind him.
At the beginning of this century, Africa was seen as the "dark continent". Explorers and missionaries from Europe who dared to go there, very often died of disease. Schweitzer was seen as having made the ultimate sacrifice, giving up wealth and success for the things he believed in.
From that moment, every book that he wrote, every word that he spoke, would influence the people of his time. For fifty years, Schweitzer used his fame and leadership to promote his humanitarian beliefs.
