INDIANA I
PHOTOGRAPHY BY DARRYL JONES
ESSAY BY JAMES ALEXANDER THOM
• 127 color photographs
• 10,000 words of text
• 2,500 words of extended captions
• Full-color, shaded-relief map of Indiana
"The crossroads of America" is Indiana's state motto, and the
description is come by honestly. Indiana's distinctive character
balances agriculture with industry, tradition with innovation. It
encompasses elements that lie at the heart of the nation and the
national experience. And it is a state full of contrasts, both in its

dramatically fragile dunes; the river valleys and vast fields of the
central part of the state; and the strikingly beautiful scenery of the
hill country in the south. Juxtaposed with the splendid landscape
photography are images... Tovább

central part of the state; and the strikingly beautiful scenery of the

photography are images of modern, industrialized cities and his-
toric small towns; festivals and steel mills; the Indianapolis 500;
and Indiana's many recreational opportunities.
Professional photographer Darryl Jones has spent a lifetime
photographing every nook and cranny of the state, crossing and
recrossing the countryside in the constant quest for the "perfect"
light, the "perfect" composition.
Author James Alexander Thom is a full-time freelance writer.
The author of numerous novels, he recounts Indiana's history
with a droll humor that keeps the reader smiling.
These two outstanding Hoosiers have collaborated to create
images and craft words that convey, in ways never seen before,
the beauty and diversity of their beloved Hoosier State.
Front Photograph: Creekwater trickles over limestone strata just
above the falls of McCormick's Creek State Park, Indiana's oldest
state park.
Back Photograph: This old red school house had become a
lowly grain storage building before being moved to Billie Creek
Village in Parke County and restored to its original splendor. Vissza
