Crisp presentation, strong photography, and
'hands-on' text make this book a must for
all Jaguar enthusiasts. A brief historical overview
is followed by authoritative analyses of the cars
themselves - saloons, sports cars and GTs - from
the MkV and XK120 of 1948 to today's extremely
quick and curvaceous XK8, with sidebars
covering topics as varied as the Daimler
Limousine, Mike Hawthorn and his Mkl and the
Aston DB7, 'a Jag in drag?'

It is five decades since the introduction of
Jaguar's ground-breaking XK engine in 1948,
and during that period, despite the
vicissitudes of the company's commercial
performance and changes of ownership,
there have emerged some of the finest and
most exciting cars ever to be manufactured in

It is five decades since the introduction of
Jaguar's ground-breaking XK engine in 1948,
and during that period, despite the
vicissitudes of the company's commercial
performance and changes of ownership,
there have emerged some of the finest and
most exciting cars ever to be manufactured in
Britain. They have also included many of the
most gracefully styled, conceived under the
expert eye of Sir William Lyons. In any roll-
call of all-time automotive beauty, his XK
sports cars, not to mention the svelte Mkll
and XJ6, will be counted among the greats.
In the first decade alone, Jaguar would
build the world's most desired sports cars,
win Le Mans twice, and fulfil Lyons's pre-
war dream of a 10Omph luxury saloon
priced at under L1,000. After that, Jaguar
set rather than followed the standards for
the industry.
From the MkV and XK120 of 1948 to
today's exhaustively developed 'XJ40' XJ6s
and the curvaceous, elegant and extremely
quick XK8, Martin Buckley examines all the
post-war Jaguar saloons and sports cars,
tracing the origins and development of each.
He analyses in detail the evolution of their
engines, as well as transmission, suspension
and bodyshell. Also described are the
general exterior and interior styling and
appointments of each car, its handling
characteristics, and what to look out for if
you are thinking of buying one. Each chapter
concludes with detailed specifications of the
models and their variants.
Jaguar were famous for the high quality yet
competitive prices of their products, and the
marque became a byword for speed, comfort
and engineering excellence in Britain as well
as in the all-important export markets. Lyons
contrived to bring high-technology
engineering into the realms of the affordable:
champagne motoring for the everyday
pocket. Today both classic and current
Jaguar cars continue to quicken the pulse of
every connoisseur of motoring excellence,
and this fascinating and colourfully
illustrated record makes it clear why.
Martin Buckley, editor at large of Classic
Cars magazine, has written books on MG,
Triumph, Fiat, and BMW. His first car was a
Jaguar S-Type and he has never lost his love
of the marque. Vissza
