There is at present no satisfactory economic history of Europe -covering Europe both as a whole and with particular relation to the individual countries - that is both concise enough for convenient use and yet full enough to include the results of individual and detailed scholarship. Furthermore, as Professor Cipolla points out, it would be almost impossible for one person to write an economic history of Europe that combined the most recent studies of specialists in the different fields involved.
Professor Cipolla's scheme provides for thirty contributions each to be written by a specialist. For the convenience of students each will be published separately in this form as soon as possible. When all the contributions have been received they will be gathered into four volumes as The Fontana Economic History of Europe with an editorial introduction and a complete index. A library edition will also be available.
