Fülszöveg

A great modern classic and the prelude to The Lord of the Rings. Smaug certainly looked fast asleep, when Bilbo peeped once more from the entrance. He was just about to step out onto the floor when he caught a sudden thin ray of red from under the drooping lid of Smaug's left eye. He was only pretending to be asleep! He was watching the tunnel entrance... Whisked away from his comfortable, unambitious life in his hobbit-hole in Bag End by Gandalf the wizard and a company of dwarves, Bilbo Baggins finds himself caught up in a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Tolkien's own children, The Hobbit met with instant success when published in 1937. Tolkien's own children, The Hobbit met with instant success when published in 1937. Now, in 1997, this special new edition, illustrated by Alan Lee, commemorates the sixtieth anniversary of a great classic which has established itself as 'one of the most influential books of our generation'. The Times 'The English-speaking world is divided into those who have read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and those who are going to read them' Sunday Times 'A finely written saga of dwarves and elves, fearsome goblins and trolis ... an exciting epic of travel and magicai adventure, all working up to a devastating climax' Observer 'A flawless masterpiece' The Times
J.R.R. Tolkien was born on 3rd January 1892 in Bloemfontein. After serving in the First World War, he embarked upon a distinguished academic career and was recognised as one of the finest philologists in the world. He is, however, best known for his extraordinary works of fiction The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. He died on 2nd September 1973 at the age of 81. Alan Lee was born in Middlesex in 1947. He studied Graphic Design at Ealing School of Art. As a student he concentrated on the depiction of Celtic and Norse myths and has remained fascinated by mythology throughout his career. He has illustrated a wide rangé of books including Faeries (with Brian Froud), The Mabinogion, Castles, Merlin Dreams and the centenary edition of The Lord of the Rings. He has alsó created the conceptual design for the film version of Terry Jones' Erik the Viking, and was awarded the Carnegie Medál for his illustrated edition of The Iliad. Tolkien's work has inspired him ever since reading The Lord of the Rings at an early age. He now lives and works on the edge of Dartmoor, in Devon. Vissza
