Első kötet:
THE HISTORY OF MIDDLE-EARTH - Volume 6 - edited by Christopher Tolkien THE LORD OF THE RINGS PART ONE THE RETURN OF THE SHADOW The first part of the history of the creation of The Lordofthe Rings is a fascinating study of Tolkien s great masterpiece, from its inception to the end of the first volume, The Fellowship ofthe Ring. In The Return ofthe Shadow (the abandoned title of the first volume of The Lord ofthe Rings) we see how Bilbo's 'magic ring' evolved into the supremely dangerous Ruling Ring of the Dark Lord; and the precise, and astonishingly unforeseen, moment when a Black Rider first rode into the Shire. The character of the hobbit called Trotter (afterwards Strider or Aragorn) is developed, though his true identity seems to be an insoluble problem. Frodo's companions undergo many changes of name and personality; and other major figures appear in unfamiliar guises: a sinister Treebeard, in league with the Enemy, and a ferocious, malevolent Farmer Maggot. Második kötet:
THE HISTORY OF MIDDLE-EARTH - Volume 7- Christopher Tolkien J R R TOLKIEN THE HISTORY OF THE LORD OF THE RINGS PART TWO THE TREASON OF ISENGARD The Treason oflsengard continues the account of the creation of The Lord ofthe Rings started in the first volume, The Return ofthe Shadow. It traces the great expansion of the tale into new lands and new peoples south and east of the Misty Mountains: the emergence of Lothlórien, of Ents, of the Riders of Rohan, and of Saruman the White in the fortress of Isengard. In brief outlines and pencilled drafts dashed down on scraps of paper are seen the first entry of Galadriel, the earliest ideas of the history of Gondor, and the originál meeting of Aragorn and Eowyn, its significance destined to be wholly transformed. The book alsó contains a full account of the originál Map which was to be the basis of the emerging geography of Middle-earth; and an appendix examines the Runic alphabets, with illustrations of the forms and an analysis of the Runes used in the Book of Mazarbul found beside Balin's tomb in Moria. Harmadik kötet:
THE HISTORY OF MIDDLE-EARTH - Volume 8- edited by Christopher Tolkien ^jj*- J R R TOLKIEN

THE HISTORY OF THE LORD OF THE RINGS PART THREE THE WAR OF THE RING The War ofthe Ring takes up the story of The Lord of the Rings with the Battle of Helm's Deep and the drowning of Isengard by the Ents, continues with the journey of Frodo, Sam and Gollum to the Pass of Cirith Ungol, describes the war in Gondor, and ends with the parley between Gandalf and the ambassador of the Dark Lord before the Black Gate of Mordor. Unforeseen developments that would become central to the narrative are seen at the moment of their emergence: the palantír bursting into fragments on the stairs of Orthanc, its nature as unknown to the author as to those who saw it fali, or the entry of Faramir into the story ('I am sure I did not invent him, I did not even want him, though I like him, but there he came walking through the woods of Ithilien'). The book is illustrated with plans and drawings of the changing conceptions of Orthanc, Dunharrow, Minas Tirith and the tunnels of Shelob's Lair. Vissza
